James was born in 1852 in Hanborough, Oxfordshire.[1] He was the illegitimate son of Jane Elizabeth Greenaway. His baptism took place at St Peter and St Paul, Hanborough on 12th December 1852.[2] No father was given on the register and his mother was recorded as a single woman.
Marriage
James Ayriss Greenway and Elizabeth Watts were married after banns on 5th July 1877 in Milton-under-Wychwood, Oxfordshire[3]. James was 25, a bachelor working as a labourer and living in Kensington, the son of James Ayriss who was a labourer. Elizabeth was 24, a spinster living in Milton and the daughter of James Watts who was a labourer. They each signed their own name on the register (James spelling his surname as Greenway) and the witnesses to the marriage were George Bond and Alice Dring[4].

On the birth registration he was recorded as James Ayris Greenway but baptised as James Harris Greenaway.
