Biography

Emily Smythies, the daughter of Henry Yeats Smythies, and Edward Greene, the son of Benjamin Greene, were married at Stanground, Huntington, England, on 4 Feb 1840.[1] Edward and Emily had at least the following children:

  • Emily Smythies Greene, b. 4 Oct 1840
  • Edward Walter Greene, b. ca. 1842
  • Catherine Celia Greene, b. ca. 1845
  • Julia Isabella Greene, b. ca. 1846
  • Helen Emily Greene, b. ca. 1848

In 1841, Edward and Emily Greene lived in St. Edward was a brewer.[2]

Wife Emily died in 1848.

In 1851, Edward Greene, a brewer and maltster, employing 18 men and 3 boys, lived in St Mary, Bury St. Edmonds, Suffolk, with 5 children. Edward is a widower.[3]

In 1861, Edward Greene, a widower, lived in St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, with four unmarried children, including daughter Emily, and a nephew. Edward was a brewer, Malster and farmer employing 45 men and 5 boys.[4]

For his second wife, Edward married Caroline Dorothea Prideaux (Brune) Hoste. Their marriage was registered at Thingoe, Suffolk, during the 4th Quarter of 1870.[5] She was previously married in 1858 to William Hoste,[6] who died in Suffolk on 10 Sep 1868.[7]

Edward Greene, Esq, of Nether Hall, Pakenham, Suffolk, died on 15 April 1891 at Pakenham. His Will and 2 codicils were proved at Bury St. Edmonds by his son, Edward Walter Greene of Nether Hall, on 9 July 1891. His estate was valued at £356945 14 s. 6d.[8]

Extra Notes Edward Greene was an English brewer and Conservative politician who say in the House of Commons between 1865 and 1891, he was the son of Benjamin Greene , a West Indies proprietor . who established the Greene King Brewery in Bury St Edmunds in 1799 He was educated at the Grammar School in Bury St Edmunds and in 1836 took over the management of the brewery company from his father, He expanded and diversified the company , doubling the workforce to fifty and increasing output to 40.000 barrels a year by 1870 and introduced unprecedented benefits for his workforce including a pension scheme and new standards of housing for his workers. He was a J.P, and Deputy Lieutenant for Suffolk and a master of the Suffolk Fox Hounds.

Greene was elected at the 1865 general election as Member of Parliament for Bury St Edmunds and held the seat until the constituency was reduced to one member at the 1885 General Election.

He did not stand in 1885 but at the 1886 general election he was elected for the Stowmarket constituency and held the seat until his death in 1891 aged 75

He married firstly in 1840 to Emily Smythies the daughter of Rev,, G.Smythies of Stanground near Peterborough, and secondly in 1807 to Caroline Dorothea Hoste daughter of Charles Prideaux-Brune and widow of Rear Admiral Sir William Hoste, His son Edward succeeded as brewer and MP
