Biography

John Greenfield was born 01/02/1829 in Ayrshire and was baptized on 01/11/1829 at St. Margaret's Catholic Church, Ayr Parish. ^[1]

He married Isabella Morrison on 17/12/1853, in Kilbirnie Parish, Ayrshire. ^[2]

By 1861 John was living in Sharon Street Sharon Lane, Dalry, Ayr, and his occupation was Ironstone Miner. According to the Ayr County census John was then aged 30. Living with him were his wife Isabella, aged 28, daughters Mary, age 6, Margaret age 4, and Janet age 2, and his son James, age 1 month. Also living with them was a boarder named James Laferty, age 23. ^[3]

Ten years later John and his wife Isabella were still in Dalry. The 1871 census describes him as a miner, aged 40 and Isabella as 35. Living with them were his two daughters Margaret, age 14, and Janet, age 11, and two sons, James age 10, and John, age 8. ^[4]

John's wife Isabella died in 1877, aged 38. ^[5]

John was still an iron miner in 1881. Living with him in Dalry were his daughter Maggie, age 24, described as a steam loom weaver, and his son James, then 20, whose occupation was painter and paper hanger. John is reported as being 52 years old. ^{[6] [7]}

That year, John married Agnes Smith (Brown) in Paisley. ^[8]

The 1901 Census records John aged 69, living at 9 Camphill, Paisley, and his occupation as gamekeeper. Living with him at the time were his son John, aged 37, his daughter Mary, aged 19 and his step-daughter Agnes Smith, aged 27. ^[9]

John died in Paisley in 1902, aged 70 years. ^[10]

Research Notes

1. John's Death record lists his mother as Agnes Weldon. The details provided by the informant may have been wrong as census data states that he was born in 1831. John's eldest daughter was named Mary, which suggests she was named after her paternal grandmother, following the Scottish naming pattern. 2. There are a number of discrepancies between ages reported in the census and in birth/death records. For instance the 1861 census records John as aged 30 whereas based on his date of birth in 1829, he would have been around 32 years old in 1861. The 1871 census lists John's wife Isabella as aged 35 years at the time of the census. This also appears to be an error as at the time of her death in 1877, she was 38 years old. This is supported by her date of birth. Census records indicate that John was born in Monkton, Ayrshire.
