Biography

Birth and Parentage

Martha Greenfield was born 1688 in at the family “dwelling plantation” — “Magoonskin Plantation,” in Baden, Calvert Co. She died in 1758. ” [1]

She was the daughter of Colonel Thomas Greenfield and his wife Martha Truman.

Marriage

On 31 January 1709 Martha Greenfield married [2] Basil Waring. Basil Waring was born 1683 and died testate before 23 June 1738 in Calvert Co, Maryland. He in turn was son of Basil Waring Sr who died testate before 29 Dec 1688 also in Calvert Co; and his wife Sarah Marsham. [3]

Capt. Basil married Martha Greenfield on 31 January 1708/09 in Queen Anne's Parish in Prince Georges County, MD. [4]

On 31 January 1708/9 in Queen Anne Parish, at age 26 he married Martha Greenfield, daughter of Col. Thomas Greenfield and Martha Truman. [5]

Martha's will (naming a slave) and death

Basil’s widow lived for roughly two decades after her husband’s death, writing her will on December 8, 1752. [6]

"In the name of God Amen. I, Martha Waring, of Prince Georges County in the province of Maryland, widow, being sick and weak but of perfect sound disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament this eighth day of December in the year of our Lord seventeen hundred and fifty two in a manner and form following ____ imprimus.

  • I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sarah Duckett, wife of John Duckett and her heirs forever one Negro man named Sampson and the sum of fifteen pounds currency to be paid by my executor hereafter mentioned sometime within six months after my decease. Also a feather bed boulster and pillows and the covering with one pair sheets and pillow cases standing in the sheel (?) of the house I live in three high back chairs and one low back leather chair, one small looking glass, one pewter dish and six pewter plates, one iron pot, one spit and all the wearing apparel. I shall die possessed of also two ewes and two lambs.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Francis the sum of twenty pounds sterling to be paid him by my said executor within six months after my decease.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Basil Waring one feather bed boulster, pillows, curtains, one pair sheets and pillow cases being the bed that I now use myself. One pewter dish, six pewter plates, one iron pot, three high back leather chairs, one cow and calf. Also two months work of some carpenter to be hired and paid by my executor for the said two months labour.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my granddaughter Ursula Burgess one pewter dish, two deep pewter plates and my small square black walnut table.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter-in-law Elizabeth Waring the sum of fifteen shillings sterling to purchase her a ring and to be paid by my executor.
  • Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Waring all the remaining part of my estate of what nature so ever after my ______ aforementioned are paid and delivered, and lastly,
  • I do constitute and appoint my said son Thomas Waring sole executor of this my last will and testament, In witness thereof I have set my hand and afffixed my seal the date within mentioned.
  • Witnesses: Mary Willson, Francis Willson, John Brown, John Cooke. Proved Jan 6, 1758

Jan 1762 (alternatively, died before 30 April 1761), Prince Georges, Maryland, m. (1) Jane Offutt, 12 Dec 1734, Queen Annes Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland, b. 1716, Potomac, Prince Georges, Maryland, USA; d. 1747, Maryland, m. (2) Lucy Brooke, 1747; b. 10 Oct 1714, Prince Georges, Maryland. Alternatively, married Lucy Brooke 30 April 1760. she died before 30 Jan 1797. Lucy married secondly Clement Wheeler, who died before 26 Dec 1796.
  2. James Haddock, b. 5 May 1713, Queen Anne Parish, d. September 1746 (before 14 Dec 1747); married Dec 25, 1735, Elizabeth Orchard; (St. Anne's Parish Registry) Elizabeth Overard of Annapolis and left issue.
  3. Francis, b. abt. 1715, Queen Anne Parish, died before 7 Feb 1769), married ca 1740 Mary Holliday, daughter of Colonel Leonard Holliday and his second wife Eleanor Hill, and left issue.
  4. Basil, b. abt. 1717, Queen Anne Parish, d. 1776, married Elizabeth Belt and left issue;
  5. Martha Elizabeth, b. abt 1720, Prince Georges County, MD m. Richard Burgess. [7]
  6. Sarah Haddock, b. 11 Apr, 1721, Queen Anne Parish, m. John Duckett;
  7. Samuel, b. 11 Mar 1722/23, Queen Anne Parish, Prince George’s County, d. 1744.
