Biography

1603 Birth and Parents

Robert Greenfield, son of Henry Greenfield and his wife Joan Lupton, was born about 1603 in Carleton, Gedling Parish. [1]

1629 Marriage

Robert Greenfield married Ann Bailey, 27 June 1629 at St. Peter's Church, Nottingham. [2][1]

Occupation

He may have been a weaver, like his father and grandfatherf. [1]For three generations (Robert, Henry, Robert) the Greenfields were clothiers or weavers of Gedling. [2]

Will, Death, Burial

Apparently Robert left no will but from the church records of the Parish of Gedling it was determined that his wife was Ann and that they were parents of five sons. [3]

Children

In order of birth, his children were John, William, Samuel, James, and Thomas Greenfield. It was Thomas, the youngest son who was the first immigrant to Maryland in 1669 at the age of 21.[3]

  1. John. The Thomas Greenfield who immigrated to Baltimore County was probably the son of Robert’s oldest son, John.[3] John was baptized 28 December 1631 at Carleton [1]
  2. Henry (not in Vick) baptized 29 October 1633 at Carleton. [1]
  3. William, baptized 26 April 1635 at Carleton. [1]
  4. Samuel, baptized 25 November (or 4 December) 1638 at Carleton. [1]
  5. Lawrence (not in Vick) baptized 19 Sep 1642 [1]
  6. James, baptized 20 September 1646 [1]
  7. Thomas, b. before Feb 19, 1648, the youngest of the six children. [2] Actual birth date of Thomas Greenfield is not known, but he was baptized on February 19, 1648 [1][4] in the village of Carleton, Gedling Parish, Nottingham. Thomas settled in Maryland and marriede Martha Trueman. [1]

Gedling is the parish, so I would assume Carlton is the place. Is there a possible difference between today's usage and that of 1603? I"ll leave that up to you! Thanks.

Upon further research -- Gedling is the Parish, and is comprised of 3 townships, one of which is Carlton. So Carlton would be the best answer because it's the most precise as a place.

Jack - Carlton (without an E) and Gedling are two different places near Nottingham. Which one do you want? Jo
