Greengrass was born in 1828. (1905 census)

Name

The 1905 census gives his Hocąk name as Ha Win Cho Kah, which is for Xą́wicóga, which just means "Green Grass." The word is from xą̄wį́, "grass of any kind, hay, straw, alfalfa, plant"; , the color spanning the spectrum from green through blue; and -ga, a definite article suffix used in personal names.
