He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War but was taken sick in the service and his place was filled by his oldest son, Bartlee, b. in 1760, then 16 years old, who served 6 years. He was a member of the famous body known at the “Light Horse Harry Lee,” which was in command of an ancestor of Gen. R. E. Lee, of the Southern Confederacy.
