William Waggoner Greer was born in Tennessee in 1806. During the Civil War, he served as a private in the 55th Regiment, Tennessee Infantry and fought for the Confederacy.
He had three wives and 16 children.

Greer cemetery was renovated by the Greer family of New Tazewell, as per my immediate family, who visited Greer Cemetery in 2004 and attended an extended family reunion.
