Biography

Robert Gragg was born about 1732 in Ireland a son of John Gragg and Nancy Wood. Robert's family immigrated to America, when he was a child. The family lived first in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, and then in Augusta County, Virginia, which was formed from Orange County in 1738.

In 1754, in Augusta county, Virginia, Robert married Lydia Alice Harrison. Robert Gregg lived in Augusta County, Virginia, approximately 38 years and all of his known children were born there.

"Robert served in the Virginia Militia, in 1758 and served under Captain Sawyers, and Colonel Christie in the 1774 expedition in Tennessee, which led them to the Tellico Valley towns of the Cherokee. Augusta County court records show, 22 October 1788, Robert Gragg about to move to the frontier of North Carolina. The records also reveal that Robert sold his 513 acres of land to Frederick Michel of Rockingham County, Virginia. Robert Gragg, Sr., and several members of his family, moved to Greene County, Southwest Territory about five years after the county was organized as a part of North Carolina, and about eight years before the area became a part of the State of Tennessee." Robert Gragg wrote his Will on May 3, 1796, and in it, he names his children John, William, Abigail, Betsey, Robert, Samuel, Thomas, Henry, and sons-in-law Benjamin Crow, George Malcolm and Joseph McMurtrey. [3]

Third day of May 1796. The Will of Robert Gragg Being low in body, but in perfect mind, and of good memory, I make this my last will and testament.

I do give and bequeath to my two Beloved sons John and William, the land I now possess to them and their heirs forever. And the executors shall so divide the land so as to have each an equal in value and improvements considered and that one shall not dispose of his part without the consent of the other.

I give to John my sorrel horse, bay mare, old cattle, four sheep and half the hogs. To William, the young sorrel mare, gray horse, one grown cow, two young cattle, four sheep and half the hogs, my wifes gun, the big pot and crook. To John the little oven and little pot and crook and one plow to William.

I do bequeath to my beloved daughter Abigail Gregg the young rone mare, one cow, three sheep, her bed and bedding and half the dresser.

To my Beloved daughter Betsy Gregg one bed and bedding.

To my Beloved son Robert Gragg, my big Bible.

To my Beloved son Samuel Gragg, my sword. All that remains at my death over and above paying legatees above mentioned and what money is coming from Virginia that may remain at my death, after paying Col. Kelley, also it is my desire that out of the price of the Steed named Shakespeare that there shall be 25 lbs Virginia currency to be paid to my daughter Betsy when she marries.

I do bequeath to my sons Thomas Gragg, Henry Gragg, Samuel Gragg, and Robert Gragg, Benjamin Crow, George Malcolm, and Joseph McMurtry an equal share of what remains after paying legatees above.

I do bequeath to my sons John and William each of them their axes, and what books remain at my death except the Bible and the harrow, to be equally divided.

I do likewise constitute and appoint, make and ordain my two beloved sons Samuel and Robert to be my sole executors. My desire is that John and William live and work together. That William trade none, but John be sole actor for him while they work together, but if they separate the executors is to take Williams estate all in their hands and keep it till he is twenty-one years old. I ratify this to be my last will and hereby revoke all others. Signed Robert Gregg

Born in Northern Ireland Claim

Robert Gragg Sr was born about 1732, probably in Northern Ireland. It is thought that John, the father, and his family emigrated from Ireland to America in the early 1740s. The family lived in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, for a period of years, then migrated southwest through the Shenandoah Valley, to Augusta County, Virginia* , in the early 1750s.[25][26][27][28][29][30]

It is generally accepted that Robert Gregg/Gragg was born in Northern Ireland, and came with his parents John Gragg and Nancy Wood to America with his two brothers Thomas , William and sister Margaret.[31][32]. It is unknown how the whole Pennsylvania birth information originated, but since there is some documentation to support this theory, both are represented here until one is disproved.

General Bio information

AUGUSTA COUNTY "Robert Gragg lived in Augusta County, Virginia, approximately 38 years and all of his known children were born there. As nearly as can be determined, he moved into the county with his father's family, about the year 1750. According to historians, the country now embraced in Augusta County was not entered by white men until the year 1716. The area was originally inhabited by Shawnee Indians. The first permanent settlement by white people in this section of Virginia was in 1726, on the Shenandoah River, a few miles below the present town of Port Republic. Although some were of German and English decent, the early settlers were almost exclusively of the Scotch-Irish race, natives of the north of Ireland, but of Scottish ancestry. Many had first settled in the south-central part of Pennsylvania, then migrated farther to the south and west to the Shenandoah Valley. Most of those early immigrants were dissenters from the Church of England - they were Presbyterian faith and victims of religious persecution in their native land. They were generally a profoundly religious people, bringing the Bible with them and as soon as possible erected log meeting houses in which to assemble for the worship of God. The Church of England was established by law throughout the colony but while a spirit of intolerance and inseparation from such a system prevailed in other parts of Virginia, the dissenters of the Valley had very little to complain about. The first Presbyterian minister in the Valley was the Rev. John Craig, born 1709, in County Antrim, Ireland. He was educated at Edinburg, was licensed to preach in 1737, and came to Augusta County in 1740. Augusta County was formed from Orange County in 1738. The new county consisted of all that portion of the Colony of Virginia, which lay west of the Blue Ridge Mountains; bounded on the north by the boundaries of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Rappahannock River on the west its territory embraced all of the land claimed by the British, without limit or extent and on the south by the Carolina line. Augusta County was named in honor of Princess Augusta, wife of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, the father of George III. After about 35 years of pioneering and living in Augusta County, Robert sold his land and buildings and moved to Holston Country (Tennessee). Augusta County court records show, "22 October 1788, Robert Gragg about to move to the frontier of North Carolina." The records also reveal that Robert sold his 513 acres of land to Frederick Michel of Rockingham County, Virginia."[33]

Gragg Descent

The first mention of Robert in Augusta County Court Records, was on the 1755 Tax List . Throughout the some 35 years in Augusta County, there are many references in the court records regarding Robert - as a witness, land transactions, and other court proceedings. From the land transactions recorded, Robert accumulated 513 acres. A surveyor's description of this land, made in 1768, was found at the Harrisonburg, Virginia , Court House. This land was bought in parcels of 100, 207, and 206 acres, from 1765 through 1768, and is located on the North River of Shenandoah. This area was vvisitedby the writer and his wife in 1977. The land owned by Robert is about two miles northwest of the town of Mt. Solon, and i s located in a small valley, with Castle Hill bordering i t on the west, and adjoining the Natural Chimneys Regional Park on the north. Modern farm buildings, complete with a s i l o , are now on the farm, replacing the log cabin home, sheds, and out buildings of the old Gragg homestead.[34]

Greene County was formed in 1783 from the original Washington County, North Carolina part of the former Washington District. It was also part of the Territory The county is named for Major General Nathanael Greene(1742-1786), a major general in the Continental Army . It was also part of The Territory South of the River Ohio, more commonly known as the Southwest Territory. Robert, Sr., in his will, named three sons-in-law: Benjamin Crow, George Malcom, and Joseph McMurtry. There i s no proof, or disproof, that Benjamin Crow married Ann Gragg; that George Malcom married Polly (Mary) Gragg, however, there i s substantial evidence that this i s fact. Some descendants of Robert, Sr., claim that Joseph McMurtry married Abegail, daughter of Robert, but present no documentation. It is the contention of the writer, that Abegail was lviing at home with her father, at the time his will was written in 1793 - naming Joseph McMurtry as a son-inlaw. Robert's will quoted in part - " I do bequeath to my beloved daughter, Abegail Gragg, the young rone mair, one cow and three sheep, her bed and beding, and the half of the dresser to herself or asigns for ever." It may be assumed from the wording of the will , that Abegail, in 1793, was living in her father's house - sharing a dresser and room with her younger sister, Betsey.[44]

Augusta County records reveal that Robert sold 513 acres of land in Augusta County, 31 October, 1788, to Frederick Michel, of Rockingham County, Virginia. He purchased 500 acres of land from Alexander K e l l y , south of the Nolichucky River, in Greene County, Tennessee, 3 February, 1789, according to Greene County court records. After the completion of their new home in Tennessee, sons John and William; daughters, Abegail and Elizabeth, continued to l i v e at home with their father, Robert. In 1787, sons Samuel, Thomas, and Henry, obtained land grants in what was then Greene County, Tennessee. Little is known about Robert, Jr ., the eldest son, after his removal from Augusta County, to Greene County, Tennessee.[51][52]

The will of Robert Gragg, Sr., was dated 23 May, 1793, i n "Green County, and Territory of the United States, South of the River Ohio." Children named were: Robert, Samuel, Thomas, Henry, John, William, Abegail and Betsey. Robert, the father, died, May, 1796, in Greene County, Tennessee.[53][54]

"Robert served in the Virginia Militia, in 1758. While still living in Augusta County, Robert experienced more trouble with the Cherokee Indians during the American Revolution. He served under Capt. hi cu, Sorry if I messed up this beautiful work, I hope I did not mess it up to bad I added military records along with all it contained I am not savy when it come to doing such a fine job you must of went to college to learn all of this. Please take a look at the researchers notes for sister, Nancy Ann. There are sources on her parents Find A Grave that indicate that this family immigrated in 1730 and that they lived for a time in New Hampshire.

Need to make some decisions prior to merge with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Gragg-345, which has a lower internal entry number for this person

Why are their 3 brothers list here in Robert Gregg and they have the same wife listed?This get confusing😵.Please take a look at these and advise how to presume which is correct😲. Thanks for any help that can be given.Also the same problem with his sons😷 😳

The query you made was a bit confusing, so I hope I can answer it…

The “Family Search” site has him as Robert Jr. He is actually Robert Sr. Robert Gregg Jr was born about 1755 in Augusta County, Virginia, and according to ( See: "Gragg Descent" ~ George Robert Gragg 1978, pp 78), Robert Jr’s brother Samuel said was killed by Indians. It’s unknown the exact date Robert Jr. died, but it was around 1800.

Also, the “Family Search” site is not all inclusive, as it totally fails to list Robert Gregg Jr on the list at all. Also, many web sites provide “Both” Robert Sr. and Robert Jr. being married to the same Lydia Alice Harrison. This is definitely untrue, as Robert Jr. was married to an “Ellender”. Most believe it was Ellender Dinah Harlen.

Shelia X, Don't see a mix-up. Nancy Ann Wood's husband is John Gregg not Robert Gregg. Robert Gregg Sr is her son. Maybe I don't see what you see???
