She is an ancestor of President Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr.[1]

Disputed Origns

Disputed maiden name and/or parentage: There are two issues regarding Elizabeth:

1. Was she the daughter of Henry Gregory?

Nothing in the record about Henry indicates he had a daughter Elizabeth; nothing in the record about Elizabeth _____ Marvin suggests she had a relationship to Henry Gregory. Therefore, she has been separated from Henry Gregory as a father. For a detailed discussion of this subject, see the G2G post G2G

2. Was she a Gregory?

Although the name Gregory has been associated with Elizabeth for many years, noteworthy works in print dating back to 1848[2] consistently refer to her as just Elizabeth ______--there is no identifiable record that provides insight to her maiden name. In 1904, George Franklin Marvin and William T. R. Marvin again referred to her as Elizabeth ______.[3][4]
Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration report for the Matthew Marvin shows Elizabeth's last name as unknown.[5]
Because some family historians have associated Gregory as Elizabeth's maiden name, Gregory was retained as "other current last name." For a detailed discussion of this subject, see the G2G post G2G

Biography

Before 1622, Elizabeth _____[6][7] married Matthew Marvyn in England, probably in Great Bentley. She was born around 1604[8][9]; her parentage is presently unproven, as are assertions that her surname was Gregory.

In 1635, she migrated from England to New England aboard the Increase with her husband and their 5 eldest children.[10][11]

Elizabeth and Matthew settled in Hartford soon after arrival.[12] There her husband Matthew was a original proprietor.[13]

Her death was not recorded but she died sometime after the birth of her last child in 1640, and before 1647, by which time her husband remarried.[14][15] Matthew Marvin removed to Norwalk in 1651.[16]

Children: Matthew Marvin and Elizabeth had 7 children. Hannah was 6mo old when the family embarked on the Increase in 1635. The two youngest children were born in Hartford, Connecticut.[17]

Adding the mtDNA FS EKA Sticker for this line. Thanks!

I trace my lineage back to Elizabeth, and have done a Mitochondrial DNA test at FTDNA, with a resulting Haplo group of H11a.

One of my 0 genetic distance matches also traces his maternal line back to Elizabeth. If you believe you are a matrilineal descendant of Elizabeth and you too are H11a, please be in touch or reply here.

Gregory-2790 and Unknown-238926 appear to represent the same person because: The narrative of Unknown-238926 makes it clear her origins are not known. Please merge these duplicate profiles that represent the wife of Marvin. Thank you.

Margaret, we could be waiting an eternity for such verification. It's the practice on wikitree to detach parents and use Unknown as maiden name until such time as we can verify her origins. I'm reproposing the merge based on the comments below yours. Please approve it.

Gregory-2790 and Unknown-238926 do not represent the same person because: At this point we my need to wait for verification of last name and make sure parentage is correct. I believe that they are the same person but caution is my middle name

Matthew Marvins wife is Elizabeth Unknown and needs to be merged the parents attached are not her parents and don't even have the same last name they will be disconnected. Objections?

Yes the two are the same person and should be merged. Parents on the other need to be disconnected and merged with Henry Gregory and his wife.

Gregory-2790 and Unknown-238926 appear to represent the same person because: I’m not sure either about this but I’m thinking that these two need to be merged. Also I’m not sure if it’s Gregory or Henry as the last name. You may want to contact Douglas Henry and Paul Stephen Hughes.

I am not disputing any of your findings. However, there is one source that gives Elizabeth's name as Gregory, father as Henry and child as Abigail. It is the Millenium File on Ancestry which I know is not necessarily from original sourcing. Just wanted to note this on the profile.

This is a comment I originally sent without logging in. The Elizabeth Gregory who was the daughter of Henry Gregory was born about 1604 in Nottingham, England. She married Richard Webb. After emigration, they lived for a while in Stratford, CT. Both Richard Webb and Elizabeth's brother John Gregory (my ancestor) are listed on the Norwalk Founder's Memorial. (John' name is spelled Greggorie). Unfortunately, the maiden name of the Elizabeth who married Matthew Marvin, Sr. (also my ancestor) is unknown as best as I can tell. This latter Elizabeth was probably born in Essex, England (perhaps in Great Bentley), also about 1604. She died in Hartford, CT, in or about 1647. Afterwards Matthew Marvin, Sr. also went to Norwalk, CT, where he was also considered a founding father.

Great job editing the biography. I wish someone would come foresrd with evidence about Elizabeth's parentage.

Kathy

Hope you all have been following the discussion of Matthew Marvin and his wives on G2g at http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/72358/should-we-kill-matthew-marvins-women?show=75525#a75525. There appears to be no evidence that Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry Gregory or even a Gregory at all. For this reason, I believe it is time to change her LNAB to Unknown and disconnect her from the Gregory family. I have added a disputed origins paragraph to her profile. Please let me know if you object.
