Samuel Gregory's father-in-law, William Mackey (Sr) ran a ferry boat service for cargo, carts, horses, and people across the Albemarle Sound north to Edenton, from his south shore plantation in Tyrrell County (8 miles east of Plymouth).
In his will dated 1765, William Mackey bequeaths to his married daughter, Hannah (Joanna), 4 named "negros" in the possession of her husband Samuel Gregory of Chowan County and 10 pounds proclamation money.
