Biography

William Gregory was born about 1819 in Louth, Lincoln (the Niagara area of Canada West, Ontario).

William's age (given in the censuses) places his birth about 1818-1819.

William's parents were Col. Daniel Gregory and Anna Tinlin. There are references to Daniel's brother John as William's parent (see Research Notes below).

William's first marriage was to Abigail Sargent about 1732 and after her death in 1746, he married Elizabeth Secord in 1748.

William first appears in the Canadian Census of 1851 -- Louth, Lincoln Township. [1]

The 1851 census has many Gregorys and households, on the same page. This list of consecutive lines, arranged in descending age, is probably the William Gregory household.

1851 Louth house: William 34y, Elizabeth 26y, Kirby 13y,

Adiline 11y, John 8y, Ann 4y, Franklin 2y.

Note: The first three children were with William's first wife Abigail Sargent (1818-1846). All of their 1851 ages appear to be 2 years older than the ages given in subsequent censuses.[2] William, Elizabeth and the three youngest children (John, Ann Isabell, and Franklin), appear 10 years later, in the household census of 1861, in Yarmouth.

1861 Yarmouth house: William 43y, Elizabeth 34y, John 16y, Isabell 13y, Franklin 11y, Daniel 9y. [3]

1871 Yarmouth house: William 52y, Elizabeth 44y, Ann 22y, Franklin 20y, Daniel 18y, Madaline 17y,

Ellen 15y, James 14y, Mary 10y, Anabella 7y, Caroline 5y, Elizabeth 2y, Alexander 20y. [4]

After he passed away (about 1872), Elizabeth continued to live in Aylmer Ontario with the youngest children.

William rests in the Aylmer cemetery, Elgin, Ontario.

Research Notes

Merging William Macklin Gregory-7550 into this profile.

There are references to two fathers for William Gregory:

John (1780 Albany, NY -- 1858 Louth, Ontario) and Daniel (1792 Louth -- 1874 Louth).

John is listed in FamilySearch. [5]

Daniel is listed in FamilySearch. [6]

The middle name "Macklin" is suspect since "william Macklin Gregory" appears in the list of children of both John and Daniel (brothers with parents Phillip Gregory and Margaret McIntee.

In Ancestry, William Gregory is listed: in one record with father Daniel and in another record with parents John Gregory and Elizabeth Briggs.

In "Sources [1]" below, FamilySearch gives "William Gregory" with father Daniel.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
