Biography

Claude Salls Gregory was born on July 19, 1875, in Middlebury, Vermont, when his father Lyman Gregory was 24, and his mother Elizabeth (Salls) was 25. He married Mabel Madelyn Spring on June 9, 1921, in Port Henry, New York, where they made their home. They had three children during their marriage. From 1910 to 1920 Claude worked in a hardware store in Port Henry, then from 1920 to 1930 he owned and operated Gregory's Hardware on lower Broad Street, Port Henry (personal knowledge of his grandson Greg McHone. Claude died on May 1, 1948, in Port Henry, New York, at the age of 72, and was buried in the Moriah Union Cemetery.^[1]

Several dates have been stated for the birth of Claude Salls Gregory. Various census records give about 1875, 1876, and 1877, except the 1900 census says July 1879. His WWI draft registration, in his own handwriting, says July 19, 1876. That date is also on his U.S. Social Security application. Our date of 19 Jul 1875 is on his gravestone in Moriah Union Cemetery, and also on his certificate of birth from the Town of Middlebury, Vermont.
