Mathias was one of ten children born to Joel Gregory and Nancy Broiles. Mathias married Mary Chenoweth on 23 March 1843 in Pike, Illinois and were blessed with five children, John, Robert, James, William and Alexander. Mathias passed away in 1909. His wife Mary died in 1913.
