NB Thomas aged 17 is the grandson. Born abt 1863... But whose son was he? Could be this Thomas's. Apprentice Clock/Watchmaker as per father(?)... and grandfather.

But he was not on the 1871 census with them. Nor was there a mother.

Did Thomas marry pre 1863 then she died before the next census? If so, who was she? I cannot find a marriage.

The Gregson Family tree on Ancestry.com has him as Thomas Richardson Gregson, son of Thomas and the mother as Elizabeth Richardson. However, they quote her as born 1838 in Bury and the Thomas Gregson she married (according to the Preston 1871 census they cite) was a plasterer and beer seller born in Walton le Dale (close to Preston, and not to be confused with Dalton le Dale with which other Gregsons seem to have a connection) and the son in Preston... a long way from a Northumbrian watchmaker. Yes, she has Thomas husband and son of the right ages... but ... And in fact I found an 1860 marriage for these people in Walton le Dale, but she was Elizabeth Crossland.

So who was Elizabeth Richardson? There are plenty of Newcastle ones... no need to go as far as Bury...

And can we find Thomas's 1863 birth? Possibly (see below)

Was Richardson his middle name? YES (see below).

Was he registered as Thomas Richardson originally? Can't find it.

Here's a (the only?) plausible birth, but with his grandmother's maiden name Thompson... (was this common in the case of out-of-wedlock children? I thought it happened only in the case of daughters, where the parents took on the responsibility...) This is odd, looking like a cover up. If no father is mentioned, must be illegitimate.

So we still have not found the link with Elizabeth Richardson.... MORE WORK NEEDED. Did any die unmarried in 1863?

But hang on... This Thomas R Gregson could be the son of one of the daughters. That would make far more sense. In 1863 Margaret would have been abt 25, Jane abt 22 and Eleanor abt 18... Hmm
