Biography

John was born about 1692 in Durham. He married Jane Simpson in 1715. There is a burial in 1786 of a John Gregson, Burdon, aged 74 nearly. If this was the same John born 1692, he would be nearly 94. Perhaps the vicar couldn't believe his age, but we cannot be certain whether birth and death are both him. If 74, he could not have married in 1715 at age 3.

BIRTH

Received wisdom is b 1690 in Bishopwearmouth, but I cannot find it. But could this be him? It sort of fits with his death...sort of (see below).

  • John Gregson

in the England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 Name: John Gregson Gender: Male Baptism Date: 7 Apr 1692 Baptism Place: Saint Giles,Durham,Durham,England Father: William Gregson FHL Film Number: 90788

The marriage records say he was of Bishopwearmouth, which means resident of the parish, but I CANNOT find ANY births for this, so it is possible he was born in Durham and moved.

MARRIAGE

Date as per received wisdom:

  • Record Transcription:

Durham Marriages First name(s) Jane Last name Simpson Sex Female Birth year - Marriage year 1715 Marriage date 21 Jul 1715 Place Bishopwearmouth, St Michael & All Angels Church St. Michael Spouse's first name(s) John Spouse's last name Gregson Spouse's birth year - County Durham Country England Document type Parish Registers Record set Durham Marriages Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Subcategory Parish Marriages Collections from England, Great Britain

But here's another one. Is it the same?

  • John Gregson

in the England, Select Marriages, 1538–1973 Name: John Gregson Gender: Male Marriage Date: Jul 1715 Marriage Place: Saint Oswald,Durham,Durham,England Spouse: Jane Simson FHL Film Number: 91092

On the image of this one it says that John was of Bp Weremouth and Jane Simpson was "of this Parish"... and that "the Banns were publish'd here but they married in Bp W.eremouth.."

DEATH

We don't have one, but I make the case here for 1786... and a birth of 1692.

Now this looks probable, given that there are other Gregsons on the page that seem to fit...

  • Durham Burials. Here are all the Gregsons on that page...

21 Sept 1782 John Gregson Jr., Attorney at Law, Burdon [this looks like G-781, G-780's father, due to the "Junior" suffix]

22 Aug 1783 John s of George Gregson Hetton le Hole [not yet identified]

15 Dec 1783 Thomas Gregson, Sunderland [G-780]

9 March 1785 John s of Jane widow of the late Thos Gregson of Sunderland [this looks like John Hancill Gregson b 1774 to Thos G-780 and Jane Hancill]

10 March 1785 Jane wife of John Gregson, Burdon [this looks like Jane Simpson wife of G-786]

20 Feb 1786 John Gregson, Burdon, aged 74 nearly [this ought to be G-786 dying in 1786 as per received wisdom, and he is described here as of Burdon... with a probable Jane Simpson above described as "wife of John Gregson, Burdon". However, but the implied birth date here is 1712, whereas he was born around 1690. I could not find a 1690 birth for him, but there is an April 1692 birth in Durham. .. making him, er, nearly 94 rather than nearly 74 as stated in the burial register. Why would they bother to remark it if it was not extraordinary? I thought that there might be a transcription error, but even the original hand-written (rather than printed) image) says 74. Still, it doesn't mean it's right, and I would like to believe that this is G-786 dying at nearly 94.]

Burdon is some 5 miles south of Bishopwearmouth and a few km north of Dalton le Dale.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:
