ECG was named after his mother's older brother, Edmund Calvert.

ECG was a book-keeper/cashier at Greenwoods Flour Mill, Blackburn. He was born at Broomfield, Witton, Blackburn, then lived at 13 Victoria St, Spring Grove (Preston Road), 4 Bath St, 47 Balmoral Terrace (Whalley New Rd). He retired to Crown Villa, 11 Rossall Rd, Ainsdale, nr Lytham.

Marries Martha Kenyon on 22 June 1852 at St John the Divine, Lytham, Lancashire, England. ECG was 28, a book keeper living in Blackburn. Martha was 25, a spinster living in Lytham. The groom’s father was John Gregson, a traveller; the bride's father was James Kenyon, Shoe Manufacturer. The witnesses were James Kenyon and Sarah Kenyon.

Martha was the daughter of a slipper manufacturer, James Kenyon. “She never did a hands turn”. ECG’s will left £140 to his son James Kenyon Gregson “6 months after my death, with no interest”. The remainder £1,582, 10 shillings and six pence and his personal estate, inc. the Ainsdale house went to the three daughters, “who shall be living with me, and shall be unmarried at the time of my death.” Martha’s will left her post office savings £224 10 shillings and 2 pence split equally to the daughters and the son, and her “real and personal property to my daughters”. The three daughters were recluses who, when they all died, gave all their money (£12,500) to six church Sunday Schools.
