William was born in 1882. He is the son of Catherine Greig and an un-named father. His birth was registered as Greig.[1] and, following his mother's marriage to Stephen Pople in 1887, William became known as William Pople.
William enlisted in the 1st AIF on September 17, 1914 (at the age of 32) and, on July 15, 1915, was Killed in Action (died of wounds) at Gallipoli.[2]
William's name is inscribed on the Lone Pine Memorial (in the Lone Pine Cemetery) at ANZAC Cove, Gallipoli.[3][4]
His name also appears on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.[5]
Immediately prior to WW1, William, and two of his brothers, had been employed by Mr T. Roberts, Butcher, at Cassilis. William and John both enlisted on the same day (September 17, 1914) at Omeo with James, the fourth Pople boy, following suit in February of 1915.
The second-oldest brother, Henry, who was working as a miner in Bright, also enlisted in February 1915 and was tragically killed in action on the Somme (France) in 1916.
