Biography

Ann Greig was born about 1815[1] at either Longside or New Deer, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, England, the daughter of Alexander Greig and Margaret Mackie[1].

On the 7th December 1840, at Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland Kirk session, Ann Greig, unmarried, lately at Dens in this parish (Longside), now at Ellishill in Peterhead, and acknowledged herself to be with child, accusing as the father thereof George Smith, unmarried, at Dens aforesaid. She was suitably exhorted and cited apud acta to attend a meeting of session next Lord's Day, and the clerk was directed to summon G(eorge) S(mith) to attend the same meeting[2].

On the 1st January 1841, (Longside Kirk) session met and compeared again Ann Greig, and adhered to her former declaration. G. Smith, being summoned, did not appear, but sent a letter , in which he aknowledged himself to be the father of Ann Greig's child and enclosed the usual penalty (20/) to the poor. She was then rebuked, exhorted to repentance, and absolved[3].

In 1841, Ann was a female Servant, living at Alehouse Hill, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland with her 2 month old daughter Elspet Smith, in the household of her brother-in-law Robert Mitchell (farmer), his wife Elspet Mitchell (Ann's sister), and their children[4].

On the 30th December 1843, Ann married William Mitchell (a farm servant) at Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland[5][6].

Ann died aged 79 years on the 29th November 1894 at Kinmundy, Longside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She was recorded as the widow of William Mitchell (crofter) and the daughter of Alexander Greig (crofter, deceased) and Margaret Greig M(aiden) S(urname) Mackie (deceased). The informant was William Davidson (son-in-law) of Savock, Longside[1].
