If her father Thomas Gregson arrived in Boston on June 26, 1637, then might Susanna have been born in England?

Looks like we need some source material ... if not England, perhaps as suggested below, New Haven is correct.

Thank you, Sandy, for keeping a watchful eye on this and other Gregson profiles..

I also think her birth date ("Jan 163[5/6]") and location (Guilford, Connecticut Colony) are suspect--likely based on one or more of the gifts that keep on giving--AGBI, FindAGrave, Yates Publishing marriages and Millennium File.

In 1892, Francis B. Trowbridge published an account of the family, suggesting Susannah may have been the fourth of a given eight children born to Thomas and wife Jane. The first baptismal date in that listing is 1639/40, for the sixth child (Mary).

We could use Trowbridge's account to estimate Susannah's birth at about 1636, which is a full year before Anderson reports he is known to be at New England.

I suggest her birth be updated to "about 1636" and England (uncertain). --Gene

Well, perhaps all (1636, at England) is not the case. Members of the English Project have located what seem a pretty complete set of baptismal records for Thomas and Jane's English born children. There are five baptisms were at London, between 16 October 1632 and 31 March 1637.*

Mary Gregson was baptized at New Haven, 26 January 1639/40, and Phebe, 15 October 1643

Susannah married 13 May 1661, so not likely born after 1640.

What do you think, Sandy? Shall we again update her birth to "about 1638" at New Haven? --Gene

  • I am working now to add these English records to the parents and children's profiles.

It seems unlikely that Susanna Greigson was born in Guilford in 1637. The town of Guilford was not settled by Europeans until 1639. The Wikitree note on Thomas Gregson's (her father) page shows that he came to Boston in 1637 and then was an early settler/founder in New Haven with Gov. Eaton and John Davenport. There is no indication that the Thomas and Jane Gregson family ever lived in Guilford. Of course, Susanna eventually married Abraham Crittenden and settled in Guilford, but her most likely birthplace and "hometown" is New Haven, where her American born siblings were also born.
