Biography

George was born in Ishpeming, Michigan (about 15 miles west of Marquette in the Upper Penninsula) the third child of Andrew and Mary (Snoblen) Greiner[1].

After George was born (but before his sister Josephine was born), the family moved back south from Ishpeming to Mt. Clemens where Andrew and Mary purchased a farm. In 1860, the family is living on the farm they bought[2]. At this time, Andrew and Mary have five children, having added two more after George.

George married Julia Brennan in Mt. Clemens on 15 April 1880[3][4]. In February 1888, George's sister Caroline would marry Julia's brother Michael.

George and Julia would be blessed with nine children:

Agnes Mary (b.1881), became Sister Mary Angeline, I.H.M.
Andrew R. (b.1883)
Martin E. (b.1885)
Mary (b.1887)
Margaret (b.1890), became Sister Margaret Alocoque, S.S.J.
Richard Andrew (b.1892)
George M. (b.1894)
Joseph (b.1896)
Julia (b.1902)

In 1900, George, Julia, and seven of their eight children (Andrew is not listed) are living on the family farm in Pinckney Village of Putnam Township (Livingston County)[5].

George and Julia continue to live on and run the farm in Pinckney through the 1910 and 1920 Federal Census. In 1910, five of their children are living at home[6]. Richard appears to be living and working on a nearby farm, owned by Albert and Sarah Wilson. In 1920, only their daughter Mary is still living at home and they have taken in a nephew named Russell Stevenson (age 7)[7].

George passed away near the end of March 1926 (the 24th or the 29th)[8]. He was laid to rest in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Pinckney.

Research Notes

What's in a (middle) Name?

His middle name (Marie) is specifically mentioned in Art Flemming's book (page 107) due to its irregularity and the commonality of his first name within the Greiner family. He may have preferred and even used the middle name Michael, but his given name was George Marie[1].

A Rose by any other Name

Due to the frequency of the name George in the Greiner Family, (this) George was given a "nom de plume" of "Pinckney George" in deference to the location of his farm (quoted from page 109 of Art Flemming's book)[1].
