Biography
Ferdinand was a Roman Catholic.
Ferdinand Greis has German Roots.
Ferdinand, son of Charles Greis and Susanna Wagner,[1] was born 3 August 1880 in Camp Springs, Campbell County, Kentucky.[2][3][4] Ferdinand (age 20, carriage blacksmith) was first counted in a census in 1900 in Alexandria, Campbell County, Kentucky, with his parents Charles (59, b. Germany, day laborer) and Susan Greis (50, mother of 10, nine living), and his siblings Katharine Mary (18), John Jacob (15, carriage blacksmith), Mary (13), Francis Christian "Frank" (11) and Barbara "Frances" (6).[2]
Esther E. (Greis) Hehmann (b. 24 January 1906;[5][6] m. Henry Anthony Hehmann;[7] d. 3 August 1994).[5][6][8]
Raymond Charles Greis (b. 5 April 1909;[9] m. Anna E. ___;[10] d. 5 November 1988).[9][11][10]
Ruth Catherine (Greis) Mock (b. 25 March 1914;[12] m. Carl Henry Mock;[13] d. 10 April 2010).[12][13]
Vernon Joseph Greis (b. 27 February 1919;[14] m. Juletta "Julie" Stevens;[15] d. 19 November 2000).[14][16] Warrant officer during World War II.[17]
Virginia M. (Greis) Ballard (b. 27 February 1919;[18][19] m. Woodrow Francis Ballard;[19] d. 24 November 2009).[18][19]
By 1910, Fred L. (age 30, wagon works blacksmith) and Marion H. (26, mother of two, both living) rented a house in Millcreek, Hamilton County, Ohio, where they lived with their children Esther E. (4) and Raymond C. Greis (1).[20]
When he registered for the draft in 1918, Fred was a blacksmith for Kelly & Roth in Cincinnati, who lived at 45 Prosser, Elmwood Place, Hamilton County.[3] At that time he was described as of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair.[3]
In 1920, the family was still resident at 45 Prosser Street in the home they owned.[21] The inhabitants included Fred (age 38, wagon blacksmith), Mary H. (35), Esther (14), Raymond (11), Ruth (5), and their 10-month-old twins Vernon and Virginia Greis.[21]
Only Fred (59, automobile blacksmith), Mary (55) and Vernon Greis (21, office clerk) remained in the Prosser Street home in 1940.[22] The record shows that Fred had completed eight years of formal education and Mary, six, while Vernon was a high-school graduate.[22]
Ferdinand died 16 February 1956 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, and was buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery, Hamilton County.[23]
