Biography

Frank Grant was the son of Adam Gren and Mary Valek. His name at birth was Frans Gren, the name used on the naturalization papers from the US District Court in Chicago, Illinois which lists his birth on April 7, 1904 in Czechoslovakia.[1] However the Passenger list from the Chemnitz which arrived in Baltimore, Maryland with Frans, his mother and 3 siblings, listed their last residence as Rychwald, Austria, Silesia. They arrived in Baltimore, Maryland on May 31, 1907.[2] More details can be found at Family of Adam Gren Come to USA.[3]

The early adult years for Frank are a bit of a mystery. No definite Census records for 1930 could be located. In 1920 he was 16 living with his parents as Frank Gren. In 1938 he was living in Colorado where he married using the name "Frank Grant". According to family stories he lived in Chicago after he left home. At some point Frank moved to Colorado and worked a gold mine. While in Colorado he met Jean Bittner who he married June 29, 1938 in Boulder.[4] In 1940, Frank, his wife and infant son, Roger, were living on Eugenie St in Chicago.[5]

On August 5, 1943 Franz Gren was naturalized by the US District Court in Chicago, Illinois. His name was changed to Frank Grant,[1] a name that he had been using since either 1934 or 1935.[5]

Frank Grant passed away on October 18, 1971 in Arlington Heights, Cook County, Illinois. His last residence was on Michigan Avenue. His burial was at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois.[6]
