Biography
When John Joshua Gresham was born on 22 January 1917,[1] his father John Joshua Gresham was 41, and his mother Charlotte Elizabeth Gunn, was 42.
He married Doris Janet Swanger on 11 October 1941,[2] in Palmerston, Otago, New Zealand. They were the parents of at least 2 sons and 1 daughter and 1 Stillborn child.
EVENING POST - 8 AUGUST 1941 / ENGAGEMENTS - GRESHAM--SWANGER The engagement is announced of Doris Janet, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Swanger, Palmerston North, to Staff-Sergeant John Joshua Gresham, youngest son of Dr. and Mrs. J. J. Gresham, Gore.[3] Also printed in the MANAWATU STANDARD - 9 AUGUST 1941[4]
He died on 30 September 2008, in New Zealand, at the age of 91,[5] and was buried in the St. Mary's Pioneer Cemetery - Torbay, Auckland, New Zealand. Inscription: "Dearly Beloved Husband of Doris. Wonderful Father of Malcolm, Jenny and Phil. Loved Popa of 10 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren"- "The Best thing I ever did was marry Doris"[6]
He served in the New Zealand Army during WWII. Service No. 800334. He was an Insurance agent and lived at 55 Park Rd, Palmerston North before he enlisted. Embarkation Details: WW2 Temporary Staff Sergeant 2NZEF Nom. Roll 14, p.38 Infantry Reinforcements 2NZEF Nom. Roll 14, p.38 Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force.[7]
