Biography

John was the eldest son of Sir Richard Gresham and his wife Audrey Lynn. He was born in 1517. He was admitted at Lincoln's Inn 1 March 1532.

Before 1539, John Gresham married Frances, daughter and heir of Sir Henry Thwaytes (Thwait) of Lowndes in Yorkshire. In 1539, they had one son, Francis, who was baptized 2 November at the church of St Lawrence Jewry and died young.

The only surviving child of the marriage was Elizabeth, the heir, born 1542, who married Sir Henry Neville in 1561, as his second wife. She died at Gresham House, London, 6 November 1573, having issue four sons and two daughters.

John Gresham was knighted on the field of battle by Protector Somerset at Mussellburgh in Scotland, September 1547, during the war of the "Rough Wooing."[1]

He was admitted to the Company of Mercers in London in 1550.

He died in 1560.
