Research Notes and Deed Records

Compiled by David T. Green 2010

  • Edward Gresham, Jr is inferred from William Forester's will which refers to Edward Gresham Jr. "Will of William Forester; State of North Carolina, Orange County: In the Name of God, Amen, I, William Forester…………. which I constitute and appoint EDWARD GRESHAM and ARCHER (Archibald?) and my beloved wife LAVINIA executors of this my last Will and Testament and trustees for my children. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the EIGHTH day of AUGUST in the year 1777. Signed William Forrest; Witnesses: Edward Gresham, Jr. & Isaac Forrest"
  • Edward Gresham, Sr. is probably the Edward Gresham who purchased 380 acres in Amelia County in 1749. Reportedly. he moved his entire family to Orange County, NC. The 1779 Tax Roll of Orange County, NC lists only one Edward. There is a deed signed by Edward Sr. and Edward Jr. in 1784
  • Note: The following Virginia and North Carolina records for Edward Gresham Sr. were collected incidentally while doing research on the John Green Sr. Family and are by no means all the records available for this family in these locations.
  • Edward Gresham Sr. and John Green Sr. lived as exact neighbors in Amelia County, the portion that became Prince Edward County in 1753/54 [Old Calendar]. Once these families were in Orange County, North Carolina Edward Gresham Sr.’s Plantation was nearly adjacent to John Green Sr., and Edward Gresham Jr. was adjacent to John Green Jr.
  • Edward Gresham Sr. was in Orange County before 1760 and John Green relocated there in early 1763.

  • Note 1: The following two deeds contain a lengthy description of the measurements of this land but they do not provide enough detail to identify the exact track of land.
  • Note 2: The limited legal description of these lands COULD apply to either the original entries of Edward Gresham Sr. or Edward Gresham Jr.
  • Note 3: Edward Gresham Jr. sold 250+ acres of his 400 acres grant one month before it was officially issued in March 1780. Therefore I lean to the fact that this is Edward Jr. selling two parcels of his father’s large land holdings.
  • Note 4: Major Davis Young Gresham also deeded land in 1788 in Orange County, North Carolina - - while a resident of Greene County, George.
  • Note 5: Of note are the witnesses to these two deeds. Is Mary the second wife of Edward Sr.? Also Harris Gresham who witnessed these deeds in Wilkes County, Georgia was back in Orange County to prove them at the August 1788 Term of the Court. Is he the Harris Gresham (c. 1762) taxed there in 1779 and married there on 28 February 1796 to Franky Glenn? That is highly likely.
