Biography

  • Thomas was born on 9 Jun 1689, son of Thomas Gresham d. 1721 in Christ Church Parish, Middlesex, Virginia and wife Mary. (last name is not proven)

(Important Notes: This Thomas b. 1689 can not be the same man as Thomas of Spotsylvania d. 1741. The original land patent for 1525 acres in Spotsylvania was requested for survey on 26 Mar 1706 but not completed until 1714. Thomas b. 1689 would have been too young.)

  • It is possible that Thomas b. 1689 is the progenitor of the Briar Hill line of Greshams . The child listed for Thomas b. 1689 is totally unproven. In one old genealogy the statement was made that there were no records for this Thomas, that he lived with his father and may have never married. In the research done by Carlton Wood, he found that Thomas Gresham died young and his estate was sued by Nathaniel Fogg over a horse.

(Research Note: This Thomas b. 1689 is not to be confused with Thomas Gresham d. 1741 in Spotsylvania who was married to Mary (last name not proven) of the "Deed of Gift in 1742" to her loving children William, Mary Gresham Johns and Rachel.

  • According to The Gresham Family by Thomas Gresham and A Family Named Gresham by Virgil Gresham, Thomas d. 1741 may be the son of Thomas Gresham of Haslemere, England, the son of James and Anne More Gresham of England. Others researchers place Thomas d. 1741 as a son of Edward Immigrant instead of Thomas d. 1721 in Middlesex. This is based on in depth research by Carlton Wood who found by keen observation of the wills, deeds and migration patterns found that the Middlesex Greshams did not have interactions with the King & Queen County Gresham lines. This is a big change of thinking for old theories of the past, but may be absolutely correct.
  • Thomas Jr, the oldest son of Thomas d. 1741of Spotsylvania and Mary (last name not proven) of the "Deed of Gift" inherited the 305 acre homeplace which was 1/5 share of his father, Thomas Sr.'s 1525 acre patent of 1705/6. This 300 acres more or less of land eventually fell into Louisa County.
  • Thomas Jr., son of Thomas d. 1741 left this 300 acre more or less share in his will of 1759 in Louisa County to sons John, Richard and Benjamin. Richard and Benjamin sold their inherited shares from Granville, NC where they had migrated. It is assumed that John stayed on the his share of land. This is confirmed by deed record trace done by Carlton Wood)

The question is which Thomas was the son of Edward Immigrant? Thomas d. 1721 of Middlesex or Thomas d. 1741 of Spotsylvania? Which of these two men is the Thomas Gresham on the 1704 QRR?

Since the total acres held by the 4 Gresham men does equal the acres resurveyed in 23 Oct 1690 for Edward's patents.

Note: The estate of a Thomas Gresham was sued by Nathaniel Fogg over the price of a horse in 1737.

  • 21 Sept. 1727, p. 183 Essex Co. Court Mins. “In the attachment obtained by Nathaniel Fogg against the Estate of Thos. Gresham the mare attached being appraise to five hundred pounds of Tobacco, it is ordered that the Sheriff deliver the same to the plaintiff in part of the judgment granted him against said defendant and the attachment is discontinued.
