Biography

Leonard Grey (b. abt. 1490), was the sixth but second surviving son of:[1]

  • Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset,[1]
  • and Cecily Bonville, dau. of Sir William Bonville, Lord Harington.[1] He was created Viscount Grane [co. Carlow, Ireland] on 02 January 1535/6.[1]

Known as Lord Leonard Grey prior to 1536,[1] he served as Lord Deputy of Ireland from 1536 to 1540.

Grey is said to have first married Elizabeth Arundel, the widow of Sir Giles Daubeney,

He is said to have next married Eleanor Sutton, daughter of Edward Sutton (2nd Baron Dudley) and Cecily Willoughby

Occupation

  • Carver in the Royal Household.[1]
  • 1535: Marshal of the Army in Ireland.[1]
  • 1536: Deputy Chief Governor of Ireland.[1]

Death

Leonard was imprisoned at the Tower of London during the reign of Henry VIII abt. 01 June 1540, where he was executed on 28 July 1541.[1]

  • According to Lyons it is unclear whether Grey ever married.
