Annie Gray the daughter of Robert Gray and Margaret Wanson Small, was born in 1896.

Annie married Adam Whitelaw (1893 - 1916), the son of John Whitelaw and Hannah Straiton Blacklaw, in 1915 at 91 Lauriston Drive, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Annie married 22 year old Adam Whitelaw, a bachelor and electric lamp trimmer of 48 Dundee Street, Edinburgh on Friday, 4th June 1915 after banns according to the forms of the United Free Church of Scotland. Adam was the son of John Whitelaw (deceased) , forester, and Hannah Whitelaw (deceased)(nee Blacklaw). When Annie married she was living at 2 Gorgie Cottages, Edinburgh and her occupation was book folder. The marriage was registered on 9th June at Edinburgh. Witnesses were Robert Mutch and Janet Nicholson Ballantyne.
  • Adam is also a Private in the 16th Battalion, Royal Scots

1916 - Death of Husband: France (Aged 20 years) [2][3]
Annie's husband Adam Whitelaw died on Wednesday, 20th September 1916 at at the age of 23 from wounds received in action. When Adam, Service Number 21216, died his occupation was private 13th Battalion Royal Scots. Adam was subsequently buried on Wednesday, 20th September 1916 at B.22.46, St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, .
  • From the date of his death it is most likely that Adam received his subsequently fatal wounds at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (Somme), notable as it involved the first use of tanks.

Annie inserts a loss announcement in the Edinburgh Evening News on the anniversary of husband Adam's death.
WHITELAW.- In loving memory of Pte ADAM WHITELAW, who died of wounds received in action on the 20th September 1916.  Ever fondly remembered. [Inserted by his widow].

Hi, thanks for your input. I have not got round to putting Annie's parents on WikiTree yet but from her marriage record to Adam Whitelaw her parents were a Robert Grey and Margaret Small.
