Adam was the son of John Whitelaw (deceased) , forester, and Hannah Whitelaw (deceased)(nee Blacklaw). When Annie married she was living at 2 Gorgie Cottages, Edinburgh and her occupation was book folder. The marriage was registered on 9th June at Edinburgh. Witnesses were Robert Mutch and Janet Nicholson Ballantyne.

Annie's husband Adam Whitelaw died on Wednesday, 20th September 1916 at at the age of 23 from wounds received in action. When Adam, Service Number 21216, died his occupation was private 13th Battalion Royal Scots. Adam was subsequently buried on Wednesday, 20th September 1916 at B.22.46, St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, .

• From the date of his death it is most likely that Adam received his subsequently fatal wounds at the Battle of Flers-Courcelette (Somme), notable as it involved the first use of tanks.
