Emma was born about 1866. She passed away 7 Jul 1929.
Emma and her husband Joseph Haynes lived in Battersea and Emma worked as a housemaid at Buckingham Palace.
Joseph was a very jealous man and always feared that men might look at his wife. He made her travel with her eyes cast down when they went out. This was the Victorian generation when young men stood at the roadside to see if they could spot the ladies ankles as they got on or off the horse buses.
A while after Joseph died of a heart attack at the age of 32 Emma married Alfred Haynes, a cousin of her husband’s, who was a Sergeant Major in the Regular Army and had always visited them. Relatives were told that they married so that she would always receive his army allowance to care for her 5 children. They had 3 more children Eddie, Syd and Margery. Margery was the youngest and caught measles when she was about 3 weeks old because Nellie took her to show the other girls along the road.
Emma was born about 1866. She passed away about 1929.
