Biography

Anna Catharina (Griep) Hillmer was born on 8 Nov 1868 in Holte, Osnabrück, Niedersachsen, Germany, daughter of Johann Heinrich Griep Jr. (1839 - 1913) and Anna Gertrud (Brüggen) Griep (1832 - 1895).

Her siblings were:

  1. Maria Catharina Griep (1866 - )
  2. Bernhard Heinrich Griep Sr. (1866 - 1955)
  3. Heinrich Joseph Griep (1873 - 1949)

In 1879, at age 11, she immigrated to the US where they settled in Minnesota.

Anna (34) married Joseph Hillmer (26) (1876 - 1951) on 26 May 1903 in Long Prairie, Todd, Minnesota, United States. They had four children, all born in Bruce Township.

Their children were:

  1. Herman Heinrich Hillmer (1904 - 1984)
  2. Maria Gertrude (Hillmer) Eberle (1905 - 1960)
  3. Frank Joseph Hillmer (1906 - 1975)
  4. Edward Ludwig Hillmer (1910 - 1964).

Anna died on 4 Dec 1952 in Bruce Township, Todd, Minnesota, United States aged 84. She is buried in Saint Mary's Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Mrs. Hillmer Rites Conducted Tuesday

Mrs. Anna Catherine Hillmer, since 1879 a resident of this county, died Thursday, Dec. 4. For the past 11 years she had been in failing health and she had been bedfast for the past year. Death was due to the infirmities attendant upon old age.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday morning at 9:30 o’clock at St. Mary’s Catholic church. Msgr. George Rauch officiated and interment was made in the church cemetery. Mrs. John Carstenson was crossbearer and the following were pallbearers: Roger Eberle, R. J. Borgert, Al Roman, Otto Griep, Louis Griep and Albert Bense.

Mrs. Hillmer was the former Anna Catherine Griep, daughter of J. Henry and Gertrude (Briggen) Griep. She was born Nov. 9, 1868, in Holte, Germany. Eleven years later she came to this country and the remainder of her life was spent in Bruce and Long Prairie townships.

On May 26, 1903, she was married in this village to Joseph Hillmer and to them four children were born. They engaged in farming in Bruce and Long Prairie. Mr. Hillmer died March 25, 1951.

Mrs. Hillmer was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and of the Christian Mothers society.

Surviving her death are three sons and a daughter, Herman Hillmer and Mrs. George (Marie) Eberle of Long Prairie, Frank Hillmer of Carlos and Edward Hillmer on the home farm. Also surviving is a brother, Ben Griep, Sr., of Long Prairie. There are eight grandchildren.
