George Tuthill Grier was born on November 28, 1841 in Goshen, Orange County, New York to George Maccullough Grier and Frances Elizabeth Tuthill [1][2].
On November 5, 1844, father George and mother Frances gave birth to their daughter Frances Tuthill Grier, in Goshen[3].
On August 3, 1850, George (age 8) was baptised at the First Prebyterian Church in Goshen[4].
In 1850, George (age 9), lived in Goshen with his father George (age 45 - practiced as an attorney), his mother Frances (age 44), his sister Mary E. Grier (age 11), his sister Frances Tuthill Grier (age 6), his brother Thomas Evans Grier (age 2), New York laborer Jesse Vanliyer (age 48 - worked as a laborer), Irish native Ann Corning (age 30), New Yorker M. E. Tuthill (age 68) and M. M. Evans (age 50)[5].
In 1860, George (age 18 - worked as a clerk), lived in Goshen with his father George M. Grier (age 57), Elizabeth Tuthill (age 80), Mary Evans (age 65), Mary E. (age 20), his sister Frances (age 15), Evans (age 12 - based on the age, this must be Thomas) and Irish Domestic Servant Kate H____ (age 28)[6].
Between 1861 and 1865, George served as a Private, in the Civil War, in the 8th Regiment of the New York Calvary[7].
In 1865, George (age 23 - worked as a clerk), lived in Goshen with his father George (age 63), his sister Mary (age 23), sister Fanny (age 20 - I believe this to be Frances), his brother Thomas (age 17), grandmother Elizabeth (Sweezy) Tuthill (age 83), Irish servant Briget (age 22) and Irish servant Michael (age 23)[8][9].
In 1870, George (age 27 - worked as a shoe dealer), lived in Goshen with his father George (age 67 - worked as a farmer), his sister Mary (age 29 - worked at keeping house), his sister Frances (age 24), his brother Thomas (age 22 - worked as a boot and shoe dealer), Mary Evans (age 74), Irish laborer Michael Kane (age 22) and Irish domestic servant Mary Hannon (age 35)[10][11].
On December 14, 1871, George married Julia C. Cowdrey at Christ Church in Warwick, New York[12][13][14].
In 1875, George (32) lived in Goshen with his wife Julia (31 - as it's written in the census), son George M. Grier (2), daughter Julia Cowdrey Grier (6/12) and domestic servant Annie Clark (16); George worked at a furninshing store[15].
In 1900, George (58) lived at 6 South Street, in Goshen with his wife Julia (53), son George Jr. (27), daughter Julia (25), daughter Mary E. Grier (23), daughter Adelaide DeKay Grier (21) and son John Cowdrey Grier (17); George worked as a clerk[16].
In 1910, George (68) still lived at 6 South Street in Goshen with his wife Julia (63), their son George (37), daughter Julia (35), daughter Adelaide (31) and son John (27); George worked as a recording clerk for Orange County[17].
On November 19, 1915, George Tuthill Grier (73) passed away in Goshen and is buried in Slate Hill Cemetery in Goshen, Orange County, New York[18].
