Sergeant Oliver Griffin served with Essex County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
Biography
Sergeant Oliver Griffin, the son of Samuel, 3d and Mary (York) Griffin was born on December 26,1739 in Gloucester.[1] His parents, Mary Yorke and Samuel Griffen, 3d, had married on January 1, 1735-6.[2][3]
"Samuel Griffin first appears in Gloucester on his marriage to Elizabeth York, Dec. 15, 1703... Our first Samuel had, in 1707, two acres of land where he had set up his house, near Benjamin York's land ; and four acres on the east side of the way leading from Lobster Cove to Sandy Bay. He had sons Samuel, Adoniram, and Daniel. Samuel Griffin, jr., for many years a member of the church at Annisquam, and a useful citizen, died Jan. 15, 1781 ; and Deacon Samuel Griffin, of the same church, died about Jan. 1, 1794, aged eighty. The
family has long been numerous in Squam. Four Samuels were living there in 1754. Josiah, born there, settled in Sandy Bay ; was a representative in 1833 and 1834 ; and died in 1858, aged about seventy. " (The first Samuel Griffin in Gloucester might be postulated to be Oliver Griffin's grandfather.)
Olive Griffin and Mary Wise married in Gloucester on March 22, 1763.[4] Theirs was a seafaring family, with at least five of their seven sons going to sea. Of their seven (7) sons, four (4) died at sea {three drowned & one was lost in combat with an English privateer}. Of the three who died ashore, one died shortly after birth, one was 36 years of age, while the other reached 62 years of age. They had the following children born in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts:
Oliver Griffin, the son of Oliver and Mary Griffin, was born in Gloucester in 1762. He is assumed to have died young, as the next born was also named Oliver two years later.[5]
Oliver Griffin, the son of Oliver and Mary Griffin, was born in Gloucester in 1764.[6] This Oliver also died young. He was killed in an engagement at sea by a musket ball from an English privateer, on board a brig 40 leagues from Bilboa, on November 25, 1779, at the young age of 15 years.[7]
