John Calvin Griffin was born on April 20, 1815 in Abbeville, Abbeville County, South Carolina. He later lived in Georgia, and North Carolina.

In the 1860 census "J C" (age 44), Farmer, was in Williamston, Anderson Voonty, South Carolina, with wife Frances and 8 children.[1]

In the 1860 slave schedule, he was recorded with 10 slaves. Males ages: 40, 18, 3, 1. Females: 26, 24, 11, 9, 9, and 4.[2]
