Biography

John Griffith II was born about 1678 or 1680.

He married Mary Hardy in 1698.[citation needed]

Children, as listed in his will:

  1. Hardy; perhaps Hardy Griffin (1725-1794). Perhaps the eldest, as per father's will, he was an executor
  2. Joseph; perhaps Joseph Griffin (1742-1803), though born quite late if mother was born ~1680
  3. Dempsey; perhaps Dempsey Griffin (1714-1785)
  4. Lewis; perhaps Lewis Griffin (1729-1764)
  5. Mildred AKA Melinda; perhaps Milender Griffin (1722-1800)
  6. Ann; perhaps Anne Griffin (1724-1800)
  7. Mary; perhaps Mary (Griffith) Williams (1735-1789), though born quite late if mother was born ~1680
  8. Delilah; perhaps Delilah Griffith (1740-1818), though born quite late if mother was born ~1680
  9. John; perhaps John (Griffin) Griffith III (abt.1718-1799)

He died in about March 1761, probably not long after he wrote his will. His wife is not named in his will, so it's likely that she died before him.

Research Notes

John Griffin III and Sarah Hart both died in Edgecomb County. Sarah was born there, John III in Chowan, which is east of Edgecomb, on Albemarle Sound.

John Griffith II (note change from Griffin) and his wife Mary Hardy also died in Edgecomb Co. He was born in Chowan, like John II, and she in Isle of Wight, VA, which lies north of Chowan NC.

Then going back to John Griffith I, we find that he was probably born in Isle of Wight, VA and he died in Chowan, NC.

Beyond that, we have postulated John I's father to be Owen Griffith, who died in Isle of Wight, VA, ad who may have been born there, or else in Wales.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Son John Griffin (1735-1796) should perhaps be removed, as he is unsourced; and he conflicts with the named son John (Griffin) Griffith III (abt.1718-1799). I've messaged his Profile Manager about this. ~ Deb
Mary Hardy was removed as spouse by A. Kreutzer without source. There is conflicting data as to whether Mary Hardy or Mary Hartt was John’s spouse. Any insight would be appreciated

John Griffin wasn't married to Mary Hardy, she was married to John Hinton. You've got these all mixed up. The Hardy's didn't have a daughter Elizabeth.

when did Griffith turn to Griffin? Or did it? Info in text says he had land adjacent to Francis Griffin. Two different families?
