Biography

Samuel Griffin was born about 1668. He married Mary Fullerton before 4 June 1690 in Old Rappahannock County, Colonial Virginia, and they had children:

  1. Sarah b. around 1690
  2. James b. around 1690

Samuel Griffin passed away about 1698 in Essex County, Va.

Three brothers, John Griffin, Samuel Griffin, and Thomas Griffin all show up in Essex County, VA around 1680:

1) John Griffin was a shipwright, married Elizabeth Wilson, had lived in Gloucester County, VA, died in 1696 in Essex, no issue. John Griffin(g)'s 1696 will mentions another brother Laurence and a sister Sarah.

2) Samuel Griffin(g) was a shipwright, married Mary Fullerton, died in Essex County in 1698, had children Sarah and James - who had children.

3) Thomas was a tobacco farmer, married Ann Thomas, died in Essex County in 1720 and had issue: John, Robert, Thomas, Elie, Winifred and Anchoridge.

Rappahannock County was divided and extinguished, forming Richmond and Essex Counties in 1692.

On 6 Feb 1688 (Old Rappa DB 8:111), Charles [ his mark] ATKINSON and Arthur FORBES witnessed a deed from Humphrey BOOTH of Rappa to Samuel GRIFFIN (GRIFFING), Shipwright of Rappa, for 22 lbs. sterling and a boat "twelve foot by the keel" one island (80 acres) lying on the south side of the Rappa River situated before the plantation of Capt. BOOTH, deceased (Humphrey BOOTH, Jr. was the s/o Humphrey and Margaret UNDERWOOD, Booth, Sr., the latter the sister of Col. Wm. UNDERWOOD).

On 4 Jun 1690 (Old Rappa DB 8:159) Samuel GRIFFIN and Mary his wife, shipwright of Rappa, for a consideration of 15 pds., grant to James FULLERTON, 200 acres formerly owned by James FULLERTON deceased, which he bequeathed to his daughter, Mary GRIFFIN, wife of Samuel GRIFFIN, who binds himself to the aforesaid James FULLERTON, Junr. in the just sum of 150 pds. sterling. s/Samuel [S his mark] GRIFFIN. Mary [+] GRIFFIN. Wits: James BAUGHAN, Richard COVINGTON. REc. 4 Jun 1690.

On 5 Feb 1691 a judgment was awarded Capt. Arthur SPICER against estate of Charles ATKINSON (Old Rappa Orders, 1689-92, p. 244), and a Charles ADKINSON is listed as transport on the 2 May 1705 Virginia land patent of 2000 acres in Essex and King and Queen counties of James BOUGHAN, Jr. and John BOUGHAN. On 20 Oct 1668, Mr. Henry WOODNUT listed a Tho. ATKINSON as transport in his patent of 1062 acres in Rappa County on the south side of the Rappa River, and the 24 Apr 1703 patent of Mr. Harry BEVERLY for 750 acres in St. Mary's Parish, Essex, included a James ATKINSON as transport. Thomas GREGSON of St. Anne's, Essex, died testate (Dec 1704-Jan 1705/6), without issue, naming his wife, Anne, and numerous individuals, including neighbor, Ellenor PARKER, widow, also of St. Anne's, and a Thomas PARKER, land purchased of Jane BUTLER [widow of John]. (Essex Records, Fleet). Elinor PARKER, widow of Essex, was the mother of Robert PARKER (h/o Margaret) per 7-8 Nov 1711 Essex wills and deeds, 1711-1714, p. 5.
