sketch of James Griffin. James Griffin, a R evolutionary soldier and pensioner. He first enlisted at Edgecombe County, NC in 1776, serving eleven months in Capt Reading Blount's company. In March, 177 7, he became a corporal. He participated in the battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth. In 1781 he served another period of enlistment for three months and was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse, NC. In 1783 he served a short period in the NC militia. His pension application was executed in Irwin Co, GA, 11 AUG 1828, and was allowed, and he drew the pension until he died. Just where he first lived in GA cannot now be said definitely. He first appears on the 1805-6 tax digest of Montgomery Co, and also in the1820 census in that county. In 1827 he moved with his family to Irwin Co and settled on lot of land No 191 in the 5th district of Irwin Co, on the east side of Willaccochee Creek. His plantation was near the old Columbus stage-road. It was there that he died and was buried. The James Jackson Chapter, D.A.R. of Valdosta, has in recent years placed a marker on his previously unmarked grave. NOTE: There were 2 children other than those named above, but they died young. Census References: 1 790, Edgecombe Co., NC; 1820, Montgomery Co;1830, Irwin.]

[HUXFORD Genealogical Society Magazine SEP 1987 pg177-182] Titusville Lib. Article by Mrs. Clifford Dwyer of Gainesville, FL titled "James Griffin, RS wife Sarah Lodge- Search for Ancestry" In papers of a cousin she found a copy of a letter from the Archives in Raleigh written in 1937 on James Griffin W 7526, to Mrs Bruce C. Davis, sister of Gov. Marcin Griffin. In it they list the battles James Griffin fought in and the dates along with his commanding officers. This is the official record of his Revolutionary War Service. The pay off is this statement: "He served 3 months in 1781 with NC troops as substitute for his B rother-in-law Shadrick Stephenson"! So, Shadrick Stephenson was married to James' sister or to Sarah's. OR in those days he may have meant cousin, 1/2 brother or nephew? Huxford's "Pioneers of Wiregrass, GA" Vol. 3,pg 369 says GRIFFIN, James: Mrs. Sarah Griffin, his widow, in her pension application dated Feb 1, 18 47, stated that she and her husband had 9 children, 7 of whom lived to be grown . She stated she and her husband were married by John THOMAS, a Baptist minister, at the home of Thomas MERCER in Edgecombe Co. NC, where she and her intended husband had gone to meet the preacher who was on his way to conduct the funeral of William PROCTOR. She said after they had 7 children they moved to Burke C o.GA where they lived abt 5 yrs., then they moved to Montgomery Co, where they lived abt 5 yrs. Then they moved to Irwin Co and lived there until his death. This statement is made more than 60 years after the event. These people had to mean something to her for her to recall names and dates so well! In Joseph Ma ddox's book "Information on Some GA Pioneers" which is a reconstruction of 1800 Census, James Griffin, wife Sarah are listed in Burke Co. This compilation is based on the 1805 land lottery which stipulated 12 months residency prior to 1 803. With these names: John Thomas, Thomas Merce
