Mary Meegan was born in Leeds, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, in 1875.[1] Mary's parents were James Meegan, a Labourer, and Joanna Griffin, a Weaver.[2][3]
Whilst Mary was known as Mary Meegan her birth name was Mary Meegan Griffin. This is because her parents, James and Joanna, were unmarried at the time of her birth, so her father's surname was used as her middle name and she was given her mother's surname. Her parents married five years later, and Mary's name probably changed at this time.
Mary was second generation English, and specifically Leeds born, on both her mother's and father's sides of the family, as both of her parents were Leeds born children of Irish migrants.
In 1881 Mary was 6 years old, a school student, and living at 20 Hope Street, in North Leeds, Leeds, with her father, James, who was 27 years old and a Labourer, and her mother, Joanna, who was 26 years old and a Weaver.[4]
In 1958 Mary was still living in Leeds, and she passed away that year when she was 83 years old.[5]
