Walter Burley Griffin was born on 24 November 1876 in Maywood, Illinois, United States, the son of Estelle Melvina Griffin and George Walter Griffin.[1]

He married Marion Lucy Mahoney on 29 June 1911.[1] They had no children.[1]

In May 1912, Walter won the international design competition for the design of Australia's capital city, Canberra.[1]

Walter died in Lucknow, India on 11 February 1937, suffering peritonitis.[1]
