Biography

Rachael Griffin, on the 1850 census, is in Chickasaw Co., MS with her son Benjamin, 19. She is dwelling 212, family 212. Daniel Walldroope in dwelling 213. He is the son of Benjamin and Ailsey Waldrop. Archibald Walldroope, Rachael and Benjamin's son is in the home of Moses Harley (dwelling 199, family 199) on the this census. Moses married Louisa Griffin, after his first wife died. This is Rachel's elder son by Benjamin living in the house with Rachael's youngest daughter by her first husband. Family 207 is Willis Griffin. I would think this is probably Rachael's brother in law (from her first marriage). But, I haven't looked for proof of that yet.

Chickasaw County officials learned that the Yankees were coming. One of the officials took the records of the courthouse and set out to save them. He ran into the Union army on the way. They took the books from him, burned them on the side of the road. They spared the courthouse because of this act. They had accomplished their mission on the side of the road. This account was given to us by the clerk at the Chickasaw Co., MS courthouse in Mar, 2009. Chickasaw has no records prior to 1863. So, Rachel, if she left a will or if there were probate records..they are gone, thanks to the Civil War.-CW
