Research Notes

Mary Griffin was born on 01 Mar 1651, at Windsor, Connecticut Colony (Windsor would become part of Hartford country when the latter was created in 1666). [1] Her parents' namse are given as John Griffen and Anna in her birth certificate.

Mary was married to Samuel Wilson (1653- ), on 01 May 1672 at Windham, Hartford, Connecticut Colony (Windham would become part of Windham county when the latter was created in 1726). [2] Samuel and Mary had at least five children. Birth certificates were found for the five children below: [3]

  1. Mary Wilson (1675- )
  2. Tomas Wilson (1676- )
  3. Samuel Wilson (1678- )
  4. Abigail Wilson (1683-abt 1773)
  5. John Wilson (1686-abt 1774)

Mary Griffin was born 1646 to John Griffin of Windsor.[4]

She married David Winchell on May 1, 1672 in Windsor, Conecticut.[5]

Research

Several authorities have given David Winchell (bef.1643-1723) a second wife of Mary Griffin. The most prominent of these is The Winchell Genealogy dated 1917.[6].

The American Genealogist Vol 24 Pages 49-50 shows that Elizabeth Filley was the only wife of David Winchell. Vital records of Suffield, Connecticut show two of the children, Mary and Jedediah as children of David and Elizabeth. Furthurmore the 23 Jun 1728 death record of of Elizabeth Winchell in Suffield lists her as widow of David (Vol1, P13).

Furthurmore the death date of Mary Griffin Wilson who married Samuel Wilson is also listed as 23 Jun 1728. The marriage date of Mary (Griffin) Hoskins (1652-abt.1735) and Samuel Wilson (1653-1697) is listed as 1 May 1672 in Windsor, the same date Mary Griffin also supposedly married David Winchell in Windsor. It is obvious that somehow Mary Griffin got conflated in the early literature with a supposed second wife of David Winchell. [7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

Griffin-8111 and Griffin-198 appear to represent the same person because: Both show the same marriage date in Windsor to two different men. The Winchell Genealogy in 1917 somehow conflated Mary Griffin into a second wife for David Winchell. See my research notes on griffin-8111 along with TAG V24 P49-50, which makes it clear that Mary Griffin was not a wife of David WInchell.
