Amos Griffin was born 12 Aug 1755 in Newtown Connecticut, the son Lieut. John Griffin and Beulah (Hubbell) Griffin. [1].
Amos married Susan Foote.
An earlier entry in this Profile, based on the published source below, correctly notes that Amos was the son of John Griffin and Susan Foote, but the published source also notes:
"Amos Griffin's father was a French Huguenot, whose wife's name was Larabee."
While there is no other evidence that Amos' father, Lieut. John Griffin descends from a Huguenot family, (if there is, please forward it), it is definitely not correct that Amos' mother was named Larabee. The Newtown Vital Records confirm that Amos Griffin was the son of Beulah Hubbell, wife of John Griffin. [2]
The source of attribution of Amos' mother being a Larabee is:
Webster, William H., and Webster, Melville Reuben, "History and Genealogy of the Gov. John Webster family of Connecticut, with numerous portraits and illustrations, (Rochester, NY : E.R. Andrews Print. Co., 1915), p. 419. https://archive.org/details/historygenealogy00webs/page/417/mode/1up
The other published family genealogy source, of the Whitney family (see sources below), while it incorrectly notes that Amos is "perhaps" the son of Lieut. John Griffin and Beulah (Hubbell) Griffin (the Newtown vital records say otherwise), it does correctly note Beulah as Amos' mother.
These two published family genealogy examples are a reminder that vital records and other original sources should always be checked when possible.
Amos was born in 1755.
