Samuel Griffin was born about 1841[1] in Philadelphia[2], Pennsylvania.
During the Civil War, he served as a Corporal in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 22 years old, married and working as a brickmaker when he enlisted on 19 March 1863 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was wounded in action on 18 July 1863 at the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
Shortly after mustering out, in September 1865, while still in Boston, he enlisted in the United States Navy.[3]
