Biography

Agnes was the daughter of Walter Gryffyth, knight.[1] Sir Walter Griffeth was of Wichnore.[2] and Annas Burton.[3]

She was the sister of:

  1. Son and heir, Griffith, married to Elizabeth, both mentioned in his father's will dated 24 June, 1530;[3]
  2. John Griffith, mentioned in his father's will;[3]
  3. Margarite Griffith, mentioned in her father's will;[3]

Agnes was married to John Egerton[2] between 1515 and 1518.[1] John was the son of Randal Egerton of Wrinehill, esquire and his wife, Isabell[1] whose maiden name was Hill.[2]

Agnes and John had children:

  1. Sir Ralph Egerton of Wrynehill, died 1596, who married Anne, daughter of Sir Edward ffitton of Gosworth;[2] Rauffe was ¾ years old when his father died in 1529;[4]

Between 1515 and 1518, at Staffordshire, Walter Gryffyth, knight, sued Isabel Egerton, executrix and late the wife of Randal Egerton of Wrinehill, esquire, for expenses incurred on behalf of John Egerton, Isabel's son, on the promise that they should be deducted from money due to him on his marriage with Walter's daughter, Agnes.[1]

Agnes' husband John died on 1 June, 1529.[2]

In 1529, Agnes Egerton, late wife of John Egerton, esquire, deceased, appealed to the Court of the Star Court, regarding the manor of Chedelton, co Stafford, which had descended to Rauffe Egerton, the son and heir of John, being then about the age of ¾ years, and of whom Agnes was the natural mother, because until 19 September, 21 Henry VIII [1529], she took the profits of the manor after which men procured by Philip Dracote, esquire, expelled her.[4]

Her father, Sir Walter Griffith, Knt, late of Annas Burton, in the diocese of York, made his will on 24 June, 1530, which proved 17 December, 1531, in which he left 40 marks to his daughter Agnes, late wife of John Egerton, Esquire.[3]

Between 1529-1532, plaintiffs: William Chetwyn, esquire, feoffee to uses, and Rauf, infant son and heir of John Egerton, esquire, v. defendant: Hugh Willoughby, esquire, revival of the suit of Egerton v. Cates in respect of properties in Cheshire, Staffordshire, Shropshire, ie, the manors of Wrynehill, Cheddleton, Heselwall, Caldy, Smallwood, Newbold and Astbury, the jointures of Eleanor, wife of William Brereton, knight, Elizabeth [Isabella], wife of Edward Lyttelton, esquire, and Agnes, wife of Henry Brooke, gentleman, and late the wife of the said John.[5]
