Biography

Rachel (Griffith) Lewis lived in Appalachia, in Virginia.
Very little is known about Rachel Griffith except what is found in her Botetourt Co, VA marriage bond dated Jan 25, 1774. From it we learn that she was born before 1753 and that her father, Thomas Griffith was already dead by 1774. When she was married, she was living with a Thomas Griffith, probably her brother.

Botetourt Co, VA Marriage bond: Wilson Lewis m. Rachel Griffith "past age of 21 years", Thomas Griffith, deceased, father. Thomas Griffith with whom she resides gives affadavit as to age. Witnesses/securities: Hercules Ogle, Rowland Madison, J. Madison.[1]

In 1774, Greenbrier County had not yet been officially established. The area was still part of Botetourt and Montgomery counties in Virginia. Therefore, even though the Griffiths (John, William, and Thomas) were known to have lived in the Greenbrier region as early as 1774.

From her marriage to Wilson Lewis, she had a son named John Jarrett Lewis which may give a clue to her mother (or grandmother) being a Jarrett. The Griffiths and Jarretts (both from Berks Co, PA) were intermarried and moved together to the Greenbrier region of West Virginia in the early 1770s. It is known that William Griffith was married to Margaret Gerrad/Jarrett and possibly Thomas, his brother?, may also have been married to a Jarrett which would explain why Rachel gave her son middle name of Jarrett

RESEARCH NOTE: Some have suggested that Thomas Griffith was the son William Griffith and Margaret Gerrad who married around 1760. However, it seems highly unlikely that Thomas Griffith, father of Rachel is son of William Griffith given that Rachel's age in 1774 marriage bond is "past age of 21 years"--thus born around or just before 1753. This indicates that Thomas Griffith was born at least 20 years before (ca 1733), closer to time William was born.
