Biography

Rachel is pictured at right in a portrait provided by Rachel was born in Bladensburg, Knox County, Ohio. She went with her parents to Johnson County, Iowa and later to Quincy, Illinois.

She married Pleasant Morris Harlan in 1858 in Quincy. They are mentioned in the Harlan Genealogy.

They had a daughter, Elizabeth Griffith Harland born in 1859 who died in 1861. Another daughter, Kate, was born in 1862 and a son, James W. was born in May 1870. They were born in Missouri.

Rachel and her children were living with her parents James and Elizabeth when enumerated in the 1870 census. Pleasant Morris Harland was not in the household. By the 1880 census Rachel, her husband and Kate were all living with her parents in Chicago. The child, James W. was no longer in the household--and presumed deceased.

Her parents died in Chicago after which Rachel and Harlan returned to Kansas City. Pleasant Morris died there in 1893 and Rachel in 1904. They are buried at Union Cemetery in Kansas City with their daughter Elizabeth and another child who died in 1899.
