A respected governess and journalist, she met Francis Barlow on the eve of the War between the States. They were married the evening before he was to report for duty and, in order to serve her country and be closer to her husband, she enlisted in the United States Sanitary Commission as a nurse. She contracted typhoid fever while nursing Union soldiers in Virginia and sadly passed away in a military hospital in Washington City. Arabella Wharton Griffith Barlow was laid to rest in old Somerville Cemetery, Somerville New Jersey.
