Biography

Meirion was born in 1903. He was the son of John Griffith and Dorothy Jones. He died 1981.
The 1911 Census states he spoke both Welsh and English, he was a student at the County School Dolgelley, Merionethshire, Wales where his father was the headmaster.

Meirion David Griffith, B.A. (Cantab), Died February 27 1981 at his home Morlais, Borthygest. The family connection with Rhiw goes back eight generations, and both his parents and late brother have been buried there. Of a quiet disposition. Mr. Griffith had enjoyed a distinguished career and retired with his wife to Borthygest nine years ago, in 1972 having spent his working life in London.
The youngest son of the late Mr. John Griffith and Mrs. Dora Griffith, his father, a native of Rhiw, Aberdaron, was a former headmaster of Dolgellau Grammar School and his mother was a native of Talysarn, Penygroes.

He was born in Ffestiniog, but brought up in Dolgellau, Mr. Griffith studied mathematics at Aberystwyth and Cambridge universities.

Whilst at Aberystwyth, Mr. Griffith was the first president of the First Year Mathematical Club and also a member of the College’s Choral Union. He spent his working life in London, first as a schoolmaster for some ten years and then in the Civil Service, Board of Trade.
Following a short period in business, Mr. Griffith took up teaching appointments, first at Hailey School, Bournemouth and later at Sidcup, Kent and East Grimstead, Sussex.
Following his marriage, to Jessie Halliday he took up a post at a small preparatory School in Dorset Square, London, N.W.1., before moving to Belmont School, Mill Hill, N.W.7.

Just before the last war, Mr. Griffith joined the staff of Hall School, Hampstead and on the outbreak of war, he moved with the school to Bletchley, Bucks.
Mr. Griffith later joined the Civil Service (Board of Trade) and during the war, in addition to his full time Government work, he held an Honorary Commission in the Air Training Corps.

The funeral was at St Cyngar’s Church, Borthygest on Tuesday March 3rd and was attended by a large number of relatives and neighbours. Interment followed in Nebo Cemetery Rhiw, where many more friends from Lleyn joined the family mourners.
