Biography

Samuel was born in Delaware about 1778 (72 at the time of the 1850 census).[1]

Research Notes

My newest, up to date research....On the Samuel Grigg b. 1778, and family.

I have found no proof of his parents, Not McGregger nor Gregg... His family was in Delaware at least by 1778, then later to Tn by 1889 According to family letter. Census records on birth of children have Samuel and Mary Grigg in Va. by 1800 - 1803. Catherine Grigg was born in Tn in 1805. Mary's family was living in Washington Co., Va. They also moved to Tn. by 1803.

Samuel Grigg had a brother named Daniel, two sisters, who died young....according to family letter written by John Grigg, Feb. 1885 and letter written by Alfred Stansberry Grigg written in Feb. 1921. Isaac W. Grigg, son of Samuel Grigg, gave information about his Grandparents, The Grimes family. With this information I was able to find a lot more info and facts about my mother's family lines. Samuel bought land from his brother in Law, Joseph Braden in 1813 in Maury Co.,Tn. He was married to Mary P.'s sister, Elinor "Nellie" Grimes. They lived on the line of Giles Co. and Maury Co. Tn.

SAMUEL2 GRIGG (MR. GRIGG1) was born 1778 in Delaware, and died Bef. August 1856 in Maury Co., Tn. He married MARY POLLY GRIMES Abt. 1799 in Virginia, daughter of HENRY GRIMES and CATHERINE UNKNOWN.. Mary was born Bet. 1780 - 1785 in Virginia, and died August 1860 in Maury Co., Tn.

Rebecca and Catherine Grigg never married, they stayed home and took care of their parents, Rebecca died two years after her father and two years before her mother died. Catherine died in 1871. She left a will, naming her brothers as heirs.

Catherine Grigg never married, she can be found in the 1850,1860, 1870 Census records as living on the Grigg family farm. She lived there with her brother Patrick H. Grigg. There were two houses. She lived with Gilles's parents for a while in one of the houses. Her will was signed Catherine Grigg.


Samuel James Grigg, never married. He was in the civil war, he was blinded. He is listed in the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 census on the Grigg farm. He lived with his brother Patrick Henry Grigg, who married Gillie Blythe. Patrick died in 1888, Samuel then lived with his nephew, Andrew Jackson Grigg. Samuel J. died in 1898 and was buried on the Grigg farm Cem. Andrew J.s wife Nancy Catherine, sold the land before she died, about 1913. The Samuel J. that married Mary Jane Dolan, was the son of .Joel Grigg of McMinn Co.,Tn. Not related....

Mary Polly Grimes is wife of Samuel Grigg... The family letter of 1921 gives the Grimes family records...Estate records of her parents Henry and Catherine Grimes of Dickson Co.., Tn. Name them as Heirs, also lists the other siblings of Mary Polly Griggs. (Braden is not the correct maiden name)

Complied by Linda Bock Samuel Grigg b. about 1778 in Delaware, moved to Virgina before 1799, married Mary Polly Grimes in Virgina, about 1799, they moved to Maury Co., Tn. by 1801, and raised their family of ten children. They bought their Maury Co. farm in 1802. The Grigg Family lived on the land almost 100 yrs. He died slightly before Aug. 1856. These are my fourth Great Grandparents. Scots-Irish descent. Two other sons, Joseph, and Mark. Graves unknown. died as young men. Joseph was born between 1810-1820 Died in 1848 in Oktibbeha Co., Mississippi at the home of a friend, William W. Browning. Sons Patrick H. and Samuel J. inherited the homestead farm. Family letter says Samuel had a brother named Daniel and two sisters who died young. Samuel Grigg is not from the Quaker Gregg lines. His parents have not been proven, others only guess...
