Hilliard Griggs ("Griffs") can be found at the age of 20 on the 1870 US census for Commerce, Scott County, Missouri, with his parents, John and Mary M. Griggs, and his older brother Thomas W. ("Wylie") Griggs and his wife, Mary. (Wylie is shown on this census as having been married in April of the census year, 1870, and, although Hilliard DID have a sister named Mary, his brother's wife, Mary, is much younger, and was born in Arkansas instead of Alabama. This census was enumerated in early June of 1870.

Hilliard Griggs can be found again on another 1870 census (this one enumerated on August 9, 1870) , living with a large group of unrelated people -- perhaps in a boarding house, on the 1870 US census for Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He is listed with the occupation of "Farmer".

On August 5, 1878, Hilliard T. Griggs married Henrietta Bailes in Phillips County, Arkansas.. Henrietta was 17 years of age; Hilliard was 27. [5]

On January 20, 1884, Hilliard ("H. T.") Griggs married Mrs. Elizabeth Gist in St. Francis, Arkansas, USA. Hilliard was 33, and Elizabeth was 35. The database did not give Elizabeth's maiden name.[6]

According to the death certificate of Hilliard and Elizabeth's daughter, Ada G. Wilks, who died on February 21, 1970 in Dumas, Moore, Texas, USA, her father was Hilliard Griggs, and her mother was Elizabeth Williams. (This provides the likely maiden name of Hilliard Griggs' wife.) The informant listed on the death certificate was Ada's daughter, Mrs. E. L. Russell. Body was to be removed to Winchell Cemetery, Winchell, Texas.[7]

On January 23, 1894, H. T. Griggs married Alice Ellard in White County, Arkansas. He was 43 years of age, and Alice was age 24. It is not certain that this is Hilliard T. Griggs, but it seems likely, since he did marry a woman named Alice, according to subsequent census records.[8]

Hilliard T. Griggs can be found on the 1900 US census for ED 37, Delta County, Texas, with his wife Alice, and several children. According to the census, the couple had been married for 7 years, and Alice had given birth to three children, all of whom were still living. Those three children are accounted for on this census. This would make "Ollie Griggs", age 16 , and 14-year-old Ada probable daughters of Hilliard's from a previous marriage.
